Established in 1922, the Department of History was one of the Founding Departments of the University of Delhi. It is the largest History Department in India with the richest spread of MA courses in South Asian and World History. Our M.Phil and Ph.D students are globally respected for their unique scholarship and have published widely. Our faculty consists of graduates from some of the finest institutions in the world and our alumni have made a name for themselves not only in academia, but in journalism, law and public service as well.

Over the years, its alumni have gone to become notable and renowned Intellectuals, Public Servants and Academics. The Department has long been at the forefront of Global and National Academia, with its faculty having been involved in the nurturing and running of prominent journals and institutions such as the Indian History Congress, one of the largest community of Historians in the world.
